SCHENECTADY — An intense, hours-long manhunt led police to a city man accused of shooting a woman and her two young children during a violent domestic dispute at a Union Street home Tuesday afternoon.

The suspected gunman, 47-year-old DeShawn Howard, fled the residence at 1373 Union St. on foot after gunfire erupted shortly before 12:50 p.m. near one of the busiest intersections on the city’s north side.

A small army of police and fire crews swarmed to the normally quiet residential area. Near the intersection with Brandywine, police found two children, a 7-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, wounded. Their 35-year-old mother was found just outside the home. A 1-year-old boy was inside the home unharmed.

As of late Tuesday, the two children and their mother were in stable but guarded condition at local hospitals.

A State Police helicopter buzzed above the Union Street crime scene and members of the department’s SWAT team along with canines scoured the area in search of the shooter as crowds massed near the intersection.

For a time, police cordoned off Ardsley Road and Phoenix Avenue between Union Street and Rugby Road as they canvassed the neighborhood. A trail of yellow evidence markers was placed along a trail of blood.

During an afternoon news conference, police Chief Eric Clifford said that the department quickly  requested assistance from the State Police Special Operations Squad as well as Rotterdam and Niskayuna police.

Schenectady police took DaShawn Howard into custody with a self-inflicted wound.

Clifford said a telephone tip led them to Howard.

He was taken into custody at 3:18 p.m. across town on Summit Avenue in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Clifford said.

Several people along Summit said Howard showed up bleeding from the mouth and chest and wound up at the home of a female acquaintance.

“When I heard ‘Shooter on the block!’ I ran outside to get my grandkids,” said neighbor Christine Duran. “My daughter was yelling at me to go back inside, but I had to get them. My chest was tight. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. It was scary — I was a nervous wreck.”

Duran said Summit Avenue is a safe block where people mind their own business and watch out for each other.

Another neighbor, Carl Bennett, said many of the older people who once lived there have moved or passed away, and more of the homes are “drug houses.”

“I used to be a nice street,” Bennett said. “Now it’s terrible.”

The police chief declined to discuss what led to the incident or reveal a possible motive for the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation. Howard is expected to be charged with multiple felonies.
