Figaszewski was driving east when her BMW sedan drifted onto the left median and flipped two times, according to a news release. Two of her children, ages 14 and 9, died in the crash. Two other children, 7 and 5, survived. The children were not wearing seat belts.

Figaszewski had taken methamphetamine just before beginning the fatal trip in California, the release said.

“This is a horrible tragedy. There is nothing worse than the death of a child. These children are
not statistics, and this plea is a public reckoning for the defendant,” District Attorney Bruce Brown said in the release.

Figaszewski is scheduled to be sentenced May 7 to an expected term of 16 years in prison.
