Legendary actress Diahann Carroll died from cancer at age 84 on October 4.She made her indelible mark on Hollywood as a Black performer in shows like Julia and Dynasty.

Carroll’s friend and fellow icon, Cicely Tyson, opened up about Carroll’s death during a recent red carpet interview.

Legendary Hollywood actress Diahann Carroll passed away at age 84 from cancer on October 4.

And as the first-ever Black actress to appear as a non-servant character in her role in Julia, Carroll was admired—and mourned by many—including her friend and fellow iconic A-lister, Cicely Tyson.

While appearing on the red carpet for the grand opening of Tyler Perry’s new 330-acre Atlanta studios on October 5, Tyson opened up to FOX 5 Atlanta’s Marissa Mitchell about Carroll.

Through tears, the How to Get Away With Murder star revealed that she visited Carroll just days before her death.

“I’ve known Diahann for 50 years, and I went to see her Sunday because we talked on the phone, and when I would go to California I would visit,” Tyson said.

“We always wanted to go to lunch but we didn’t go because she knew that she could not. And so I called the house, and said I was coming out to see her.

And I went and I visited her Sunday, and it was um..

. I knew that I wouldn’t see her again.

It’s fitting that Tyson, 94, and Carroll enjoyed a close bond, as both women had historic careers, breaking ground for many African American actors. Carroll, who starred in Dynasty, earned a Golden Globe award, Tony award, and Oscar nomination, while Tyson has an honorary Oscar, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and two Emmys for her roles in Jane Pittman and Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All.

Tyson also told Mitchell: “She was not well but I didn’t expect her to go so fast. But she was in a lot of pain so she is out of that.

Our thoughts are with Carroll’s family and friends.
