After a dream run at the box office in 2017, Rajkummar Rao will back on the big screen to cast a spell on all of us all over again. However, this time the film he is coming with is one of his most ambitious. For this probably is the first time that the film’s lead an antagonist. Omerta is a story about Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the dreaded British terrorist of Pakistani descent. The film is helmed by Hansal Mehta. The director-actor duo has earlier collaborated on few of the most critically acclaimed projects be it Shahid, a biopic of lawyer Shahid Azmi, which got Rajkummar Rao his first National Award or CityLights. Apart from the two films, they also worked on web series, Bose: Dead/Alive.
Seeing the kind of camaraderie they share one would think Rajkummar Rao would have been the obvious choice for the lead role in Omerta. But turns out that wasn’t the case. In fact, before deciding to go with Rajkummar Rao, Hansal Mehta wanted to make Omerta with a Hollywood actor. And that Hollywood actor is Riz Ahmed, a British actor of Pakistani descent, who has worked in films like Nightcrawler and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This story’s been with him since 2005. So he’s known a lot about him. He told me about the story when we have just started making Shahid in 2011 and that time he has, I think, Riz Ahmed on his mind. That he wanted to make this film with him. But then luckily we ended up making so many films and we became really close. And I replaced…whatever..his wishful actors.
