Tucson’s Miraval has long been one of the most acclaimed destinations in the world for a fitness and wellness vacation. Now Miraval has opened a second resort in one of the nation’s most popular travel destinations – red hot Austin, Texas.
The original Miraval launched in Arizona in 1995 as one of the early pioneers of the destination wellness spa resort category, and ever since has been renowned for its comprehensive program of activities, experiences, healthy food and treatments. The brand was bought by Hyatt hotels three years ago and quickly began expanding with the opening of Miraval Life in Balance spas at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California, and the new Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour in the Caribbean. But Miraval Austin, which just opened its doors (January 2019), is the brand’s first new full-service wellness resort in a quarter of a century. A third Miraval resort is slated to open later this year in Lenox, Massachusetts (interestingly, Miraval arch-rival Canyon Ranch also launched in Tucson and added a campus in Lenox, where it has been operating for many years).
Miraval occupies the site of the former Travaasa Austin, also an experiential wellness resort (Travaasa still operates one well-regarded active resort in Hana, Hawaii), on 220 acres overlooking Lake Travis. The property includes 117 guestrooms, suites and villas, all featuring Miraval’s signature bedding and sleep enhancing amenities (including black out shades and Miraval’s signature “cell phone sleeping bag”).
The large 21,000 square foot Life in Balance Spa has 30 treatment rooms – more than one for every four accommodations, an extremely high ratio – along with saunas, spa pool, steam room, retail boutique and a long menu of innovative spa experiences combining signature treatments from the Arizona property with new original place-based Texan ones. Highlights of these innovative treatments include Pranayama-ḍina, an experience combining the power of breathwork with a supported “floating” massage, and Wild Harvest Herbal Healer, where guests hand pick the herbs from the on-site 10-acre organic farm that are then used for their massage.
The property is focusing on its new sense of place, and even created a pecan mask (in conjunction with acclaimed organic skincare company Laurel) to utilize Texas’s famous nut in a healthier way then the more traditional pecan pie dessert. In this vein, the main resort eatery, Crossings Hilltop Kitchen, serves a healthy twist on often decadent Southern-inspired dishes, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Miraval Austin also has the Discovery Pool Café and The Nest, a signature smoothie bar offering coffee and smoothies during the day (and craft cocktails in the evenings for those who want to mix fitness and boozy pleasure).
All snacks, smoothies, meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included in rates. All packages also include accommodations, a generous nightly resort credit to use toward spa services and private sessions (credit varies by package booked), non-private activities and classes, and complimentary shared shuttle service from the airport. Miraval is a non-tipping resort.
There is an extensive slate of health and wellness programming including yoga, meditation, nutrition, culinary classes, self-care workshops, art therapy, beekeeping, nutrition workshops and more. There is plenty of guided hiking, a newly built yoga barn with great views, and one especially notable offering is Qoya, a women’s movement practice that combines yoga, breathwork and intention setting. For guests looking to step out of their comfort zones, Miraval Austin features activities including slacklining, archery, hatchet throwing, and a pole climbing activity called Quantum Leap. Fitness classes are held in a 5,600 square foot Body Mindfulness Center, loaded with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment and a studio for Cardio Drumming, Bosu Blast and indoor cycling classes.
The signature Miraval Equine Experience, developed more than 20 years ago in Arizona, will be offered here as well, at Cypress Creek Organic Farm and Ranch. This on-property farm also provides fresh local produce for the kitchens and hands-on culinary programming for guests, in a well-equipped Life in Balance Culinary Kitchen outfitted by Williams Sonoma.
“For over 20 years, Miraval has been dedicated to inspiring total mind, body and spirit wellness by offering guests authentic experiences rooted in mindfulness,” said Marc W. Ellin, global head of Miraval Group, via release. “As we open Miraval Austin, we look forward to welcoming Miraval’s loyal guests, as well new audiences to experience the fulfillment, pleasure and growth that come with a Miraval experience.”
