From Booker to Christie, N.J. leaders send Gov. Murphy support after tumor diagnosis

Leaders on both sides of the political aisle — from Cory Booker to Chris Christie — are offering well wishes and prayers to Gov. Phil Murphy after he announced he’s been diagnosed with a likely cancerous tumor and will soon undergo surgery to remove it.

Murphy, 62, told NJ Advance Media on Saturday that doctors discovered the tumor in its early stages and have “complete confidence” they’ll be able to fully excise it. He also tweeted that “the prognosis is very good.

Shortly after the news broke, some of New Jersey’s top political figures began lending their support:

CORY BOOKER, U.S.

senator from New Jersey

Booker, a fellow Democrat, tweeted that Murphy is “a fighter” who “will win” this battle.

ROBERT MENENDEZ, U.

S. senator from New Jersey

The Garden State’s senior Democratic senator tweeted that he’s praying for Murphy.

CHRIS CHRISTIE, former New Jersey governor

Murphy’s Republican predecessor (and frequent foil) told the governor on Twitter that all of New Jersey “will be joining us in praying for your full recovery.”

CRAIG COUGHLIN, state Assembly speaker

Coughlin, the Democratic leader of the lower house of the New Jersey Legislature, released a statement saying he and his wife were “saddened” to learn the news.

“We spoke earlier and are confident he will have a full and speedy recovery,” Coughlin said. “We wish the best to the Governor, First Lady, and the entire Murphy family.

His good health is foremost in our minds and hearts.”

JON BRAMNICK, Assembly minority leader

The top Republican in the Assembly — who may seek to challenge Murphy for the governor’s seat in next year’s election — released a statement saying his thoughts are with Murphy and family.

“He is a fighter and I wish him a speedy recovery,” Bramnick, R-Union, said.

DONALD NORCROSS, New Jersey congressman

The Democrat who represents the state’s 1st district in the U.

S. House of Representatives tweeted that “New Jersey’s pulling” for the governor.

JOSH GOTTHEIMER, New Jersey congressman

The Democrat who represents the state’s 5th district tweeted that he’s looking forward to seeing Murphy run a 5K next month — a pledge the governor made Saturday despite the diagnosis.

BILL PASCRELL JR.

, New Jersey congressman

The Democrat who represents the state’s 9th district tweeted that Murphy is “tough as nails” and will “beat this.”

MIKIE SHERRILL, New Jersey congresswoman

The Democrat who represents the state’s 11th district wished Murphy “a speedy recovery” via Twitter.

RAYMOND LESNIAK, former state senator

The now-retired veteran lawmaker — who challenged Murphy for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2017 — tweeted his “best thoughts and prayers.”

JARED POLIS, Colorado governor

Across the country, Polis, also a Democrat, sent “best wishes” to Murphy.

AMOL SINHA, executive director of the New Jersey branch of the American Civil Liberties Union

Murpy, an avowed progressive, said the diagnosis reinforces his fight to improve health care, tweeting that it’s “a right, not a privilege for a select few.”

Sinha praised Murphy as “a class act” for drawing attention to the issue.
