Letter to editor: Let’s work to protect health of low-income children

It was very heartwarming to read about the generous contributions that made the sixth annual Town of Palm Beach United Way Boxed for Success School Supply Drive a huge success. It’s so inspiring to see people help facilitate a great education for young children from low-income backgrounds.

I hope that Palm Beach residents can also extend their generosity to the millions of economically disadvantaged children that die each year from preventable illnesses. It’s outrageous that annually around 5.6 million children are lost from health issues like diarrhea, pneumonia, and malnutrition when we have all the resources to combat them.

We need people to raise their voices to support initiatives that can save the lives of these countless innocent children. The Reach Every Mother and Child Act is one way we can ensure the end of preventable deaths globally by 2030. We’re very lucky that one of our Palm Beach representatives, Rep. Ted Deutch, is on the House foreign affairs committee and has the power to lead this issue into the spotlight in Congress. Let’s pass this legislation and help ensure the rights of all children to live healthy lives.
