Matteo Berrettini became the new Italy’s No. 1 after his win over Dominic Thiem in the Shanghai quarter-finals on Friday. The 23-year-old overcame his compatriot Fabio Fognini on the rankings and now everyone knows who Berrettini is.
This year he reached the Wimbledon fourth round and then the US Open semifinals. In July, during Wimbledon, he had a photoshoot for GQ China and he joked on Instagram that Roger Federer had forced him to change his job after the straight-set loss he suffered.
Berrettini has everything to become a great player and nice brand ambassador. Asked if he plans to join the fashion world anytime soon, he replied: “In the beginning I liked it, now I love it”, Matteo told the Rolex Shanghai Masters website.
“It’s a bit distracting off the court. It’s definitely not my job, but I am happy to spend time for it when I have the chance to, also in order to have a more open mentality. Now there are more attentions, you have to handle it, you can get tired a bit but I have a great team behind me and my agent is doing very well in managing it.”
How is his agent helping him with all the requests from sponsors and media? “A lot, since I was young. Now even more. But I think he is happy, we started when I was not that good, he saw me growing quickly, we are good friends and I have a good relationship with my team. It’s nice that they have a good relationship off the court.”
