LANCASTER, S.C. – Toya Hill said she feels blessed.

“We’re still living. Me and my kids,” she said.

Hill and her four children were terrified Monday when a huge tree came crashing through their roof, crushing their house on Summit Avenue in Lancaster.

“It’s going to hurt a lot. The whole house is messed up,” Hill said.

Tropical Storm Irma pounded the area with heavy rain and wind gusts that reached 50 mph. Neighbors several doors down heard the tree fall.

“I was in the kitchen and I heard the boom. The wind was whipping and the rain was torrential,” neighbor Nina Hordych said. “I’m just so glad that they’re OK.”

Hill’s daughter, Janautica, and three other children were in the house. Janautica described what happened.

“We heard a big boom, and then I heard my little brother screaming. When I looked up, I (saw) the ceiling caving in and so we all started running,” she said.

They went to get their mother who’d been sleeping in a back room and got everyone out safely.

Channel 9 was there when Lancaster County emergency management officials came back to the house to assess the damage.

“This is by far the worst damage to any structure in the county,” emergency management director Darren Player said.

A part of the same tree fell on the house a few years ago. Hill said they couldn’t get insurance because she couldn’t afford to make the repairs and adjustments to the house their insurance company required.  Now, she doesn’t know what she’ll do.  She’s raised her children there for 14 years.

The Red Cross is helping the family with their ne.
