This Half-Face Zombie Makeup Look Is the Trippiest Halloween …

If committing to a full face of costume makeup is too much for you to handle, try a half-face look instead. This one, created by makeup artist Vanessa Mendez, pairs together a classic glam look and a creepy zombie. Watch her video tutorial above, and follow along below to learn how it’s done so you can wear it yourself this Halloween.

STEP 1: TRACE YOUR HALF-FACE SECTION.

Use a brown pencil liner to faintly outline the section of your face that you’re transforming into a zombie. The area inside this section of your face is what you’ll focus on for steps two through seven.

STEP 2: PAINT YOUR BASE.

First, conceal your brows inside the section. Mendez used glue stick to lay her brows flat in an upward direction. Between each layer of glue, let the product dry and set it with a finishing powder. Continue this pattern until your brow hairs are sealed. Then, use a sponge and pale face paint to paint over the entire section.

STEP 3: OUTLINE YOUR SKULL.

Using a fine tip liner brush and little bit of black face paint, draw the form of a skull, including the outline of the eye socket, cheekbones, jaw, and teeth. Use a photo of a skull for reference.

STEP 4: BLEND THE LINES AND YOUR EYE SOCKET.

While the black paint is still wet, use a blending brush to blur the lines. Then grab a matte reddish brown shadow and begin shading inside the skull’s eye socket.

STEP 5: EMPHASIZE THE CONTOURS AND HIGHLIGHTS.

To create a dramatic 3D effect, Mendez suggests creating shadows and lights on your surface. To do so, she says build the details on top of each other with thin layers of paint. Use black or gray paint for the areas you want to recess and white for the areas you want to raise.

STEP 6: OUTLINE YOUR SKULL.

With another fine tip brush and black paint, go back and define the black lines you smudged in step four. Also define the very edge of your outlined section.

STEP 7: BLEND THE EDGES.

Use a smudger brush and brown shadow to fade your zombie section into the skin of your other look.

STEP 8: CREATE A GLAM MAKEUP LOOK ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR FACE.

On this half of your face, create your favorite night-out look. Make it as glam and over the top as you can with false lashes and lots of shimmery highlighter to really contrast the zombie look on the other side. Once you’re finished with your makeup, go back and add tiny black lines around your zombie section to create a cracked effect as if the zombie is breaking through your glam face.

AND YOU’RE DONE! TRIPPY, RIGHT?
