‘This Is Us’ Tackles Motherhood With Kate’s IVF Surgery and Rebecca’s Back Story

While NBC’s This Is Us has spent nearly two seasons portraying the intricacies of fatherhood, the third episode of season three, “Katie Girls,” will take on motherhood as Kate (Chrissy Metz) undergoes IVF surgery and flashbacks tell the story of Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) pre-Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) days — and even examines her own relationship with her mother (played in the past by Elizabeth Perkins).

Star Moore told The Hollywood Reporter after the show‘s third season premiere that while several episodes of the season will focus on Jack’s time in Vietnam, the third episode will share a glimpse of Rebecca’s early life.

“We’ll see a little bit of Rebecca’s past and how seeing her mother and father’s relationship crystallizes why she doesn’t want to follow in line and be the kind of woman her mother is,” Moore said.

Co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger told THR that the episode will pick up where the premiere left off — with a new man (played by Hunter Parrish, We) on Rebecca’s doorstep.

Said Aptaker, “Hunter was so lovely. He came and just hit it off with everyone and Mandy right away. That’s definitely not a stranger at her door — that’s someone from her past who she knows who thought it would be a good idea to show up with flowers and kiss her. So you have to think that’s a past relationship or someone from Rebecca’s history. I don’t want to say much more than that, but we’re going to tell the full story there.”

Added Berger, “Obviously [Rebecca and Jack] met randomly one night at a bar. The same way that Jack had a whole full life right before he spotted Rebecca, Rebecca also had a whole full life. So we’re going to get much more of a glimpse of what that life was like.”

As for Kate, while Rebecca finding out about the IVF led to a tense confrontation between mother and daughter — Rebecca voiced her concern about the risks associated with the procedure, but the duo ultimately made up — she’ll be focused on doing everything she can to hopefully have a successful experience with IVF.

“What’s beautiful is that [Kate’s doctor is] like, ‘You know what? No. I got into this because I want to make a change for people that have a difficult time with conception,'” Metz told THR. “It doesn’t matter if you’re thin or overweight. Women just sometimes have a difficult time.”

In addition, while Kate doesn’t quite realize the severity of what’s happening with her husband, Toby (Chris Sullivan), it won’t take too long for her to realize something is happening with his depression.

“It’s not going to take very long,” Metz confirmed. “We’ll definitely see that start to unravel and the physical effects it has on Toby.”

Although This Is Us is still a family drama and Kate has experienced plenty of recent setbacks, there will be some wins for her character.

“You’re going to be pleasantly surprised,” Metz teased. “There’s some good stuff going on.”

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
