This weekend, supermodel Gigi Hadid opened up to her followers about something she’s been dealing with since she was 17: Hashimoto’s disease, a common thyroid condition that causes inflammation in the thyroid and leads to unexplained weight gain, brain fog, depression, fatigue, and more.
“For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation water retention due to that,” she tweeted on Sunday. “Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc. … I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.”
Her main message to her critics is that she’s learning new things about her body every day, and she hopes they can learn to have more compassion for people who may be struggling with something privately. “Please, as social media users human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t.”
It comes as no surprise that Hadid puts her health first, especially because she’s been open about how important wellness is to her. From shutting down body shamers to exercising for her mental health, there’s no question that Hadid knows exactly what to do for her overall well-being—so it’s great to know that she’s taking charge and working hard to keep her Hashimoto’s under control.
