(ABC News)

A 25-year-old woman has died in a horror crash which tore her car apart and left debris strewn across a highway in Melbourne‘s south-east.

Police said the BMW sedan hit a traffic light pole before slamming into a light pole on the Nepean Highway, at Cheltenham, near Southland shopping centre, shortly after 5:00am Saturday.

The Dandenong woman, who was believed to be the only occupant of the car, died at the scene.

The crash spread wreckage over a distance of more than 100 metres, and across six lanes of the highway.

Police believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Footage of the scene shows a bottle of vodka among the crash debris.

A stretch of the highway near the intersection of Bay Road was closed in both directions for several hours as police investigated.

Some lanes have since reopened, but traffic management is in place while the pole is reinstated.

Motorcyclist killed in head-on collision

Also on Saturday, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car in Healesville, east of Melbourne.

Police said the motorcyclist was travelling south on Myer Creek Road when they collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction about 10:40am.

The rider died at the scene.

The male driver of the car is assisting police with their enquiries.

Four other people inside the car were uninjured.

The rider’s death brings the state’s 2018 road toll to 157, 31 less than at the same point last year.

Teenager fighting for life after car collides with train

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy is in a critical condition after a train hit a car at a level crossing at Bairnsdale in Victoria’s east Friday night.

The boy, who was a passenger in the car, was trapped for more than an hour before he was freed by emergency services.

He was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries to his head, chest and pelvis after the crash at a crossing in Ligar Street about 6:30pm.

The 19-year-old female driver of the car was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police are yet to speak to the driver of the car.

Police said none of the 38 passengers on the Melbourne-bound train were injured in the collision.

The crossing did not have a boom gate, but did have warning lights.

Detective Sergeant Daryll Out of the major collisions investigation unit said police were investigating all the circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether the crossing signals were operating and whether the driver may have been distracted by something.

He said the accident served as a reminder to drivers of the need to pay close attention around railway crossings.

Detective Sergeant Out said the train line ran close behind houses and many more people could have been injured had the train derailed.

“It’s very lucky that the train didn’t derail… with that amount of people on board we could have had a much worse situation,” he said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
